Dollar Store Organization Hacks
When it comes to getting your car organized, there is absolutely no reason you should feel the need to spend a lot of money. Our cars are meant to be used, not to be perfect. The Dollar Store is an amazing place to start. Some of the areas you can focus on tackling are…
- The glove box
- The trunk
- The center console
- Behind your seats
Immediately when I think of the dollar store, I think of affordable plastic document organizers, plastic crates, hanging organizers, etc. Whenever starting an organization project, I truly like to start here. Amazon, Target, Walmart, etc. all have amazing organization products. However, I have hit the jackpot at the dollar store and you truly cannot beat the price.
I always suggest this for people who have kids or pets as well. There is no need to spend a lot of money on these items if you are worried that they won’t last for one reason or another.
I personally have used document organizers from the dollar store in a number of areas in my house & car. However, I particularly love them for the glove box. There are a number of compartments so you can easily identify what is where. Between insurance documents, registration documents, repair receipts, etc. it can be hard to keep your glove box organized. These are an amazing hack that I highly recommend.
Aside from document organizers, the Dollar Store tends to have a number of plastic containers that would be great for your center console. This way you can organize your pens, your change, and any other tools/small items you tend to keep in your center console.
There is nothing more frustrating than pulling over to rummage through your glove box or center console when you need something and these products will make your life so much easier to grab things when you’re on the go!
Car Organization Trunk
If you’re anything like me, keeping your trunk organized can be the hardest. I usually have the following items in my trunk at any given moment.
- Sweatshirts/jackets
- Gym clothes/shoes
- Umbrellas
- Snow tools
- Yoga Mat
- A bag of items to be donated
- Items to return
- Cleaning supplies
- Snacks/water
I am personally someone that likes to be prepared for legit any scenario. If we are taking my car, I have almost everything you can think of and then additional spare items. However, just because I have a lot of different items in my trunk doesn’t mean that I don’t work to keep them organized. As I mentioned previously, it is so helpful when you know where things are so you can simply grab them when you need them.
When it comes to the trunk, I like to use a mixture of bags & bins/crates to keep my items organized. For example, I don’t just throw all of my workout stuff in the trunk, I tend to keep a gym bag with everything in it (even if I’m not carrying the bag into the gym). This way I know where anything gym related is.
I tend to use a crate for all cleaning supplies items. It keeps it nice and organized and when I am at the carwash or vacuuming out my car, everything is in one place.
I usually keep a bin for clothes that I plan to donate or items I have to return. This way any time I am near a donation bin or running errands, everything is easily accessible and I can tackle those errands.
An additional benefit of having things categorized in bins or bags is that if you ever need to clear out your trunk, you can remove the bins instead of having individual items that you are then clearing out.
Car Organization Hacks for Road Trips
Road trips are the absolute best if you ask me. I am thrilled when I’m filling up my gas tank and grabbing gas station snacks and drinks before we leave. There’s nothing like it to spark your road trip excitement.
A few of the hacks that I have learned for road trips are below.
- Have lots of water on hand! Whether you are traveling with friends, kids or pets, everyone can you some spare water for one reason or another. It’s super helpful to have some extra reusable water bottles stored throughout the car that you can then fill up when you stop if needed.
- Create a playlist! Back in the day I used to love grabbing a few of my favorite CD’s before we would drive from RI to FL as a family, but now I get so excited to create my road trip playlists on Spotify. You can create a few different ones for different times of the trip and this way you aren’t scrolling through Spotify to find something you like.
- This is an easy one but an important one! Have some kind of emergency kit on hand. Regardless of who is in your car, having a first aid kit is really important. Whether you grab one pre-assembled or purchase some of the essentials yourself, you’ll be glad you did.
- Get a car trash can! This one is my favorite considering I am a neat freak. There is nothing I hate more than the though of tossing candy wrappers, straw wrappers, etc. in the doors of the car while you’re on a road trip. Either DIY a trashcan set up or grab a cheap small trash can from the dollar store. You’ll be so happy to have one that you can just empty at your destination.
- Have an emergency roadside kit ready! This is one you hope you don’t need but could be extremely helpful. Some items I would have in mine is jumper cables, a flashlight, some gloves, zip-ties, duct tape, bungee cords, etc.
- Snacks! Who doesn’t love snacks. I like to keep a cooler near the front seat for longer road trips. This is great for keeping all of your snacks in one place. I tend to get individual bags of certain snacks so they are easy to pass around if needed.
DIY Car Organization Ideas
A lot of the areas we have covered can be purchased as pre-assembled kits, but a lot of them can be DIY projects that could help you save some money in the long run. I would use the Dollar Store for most of these if I was able to find everything I needed.
- Car Trashcan
- Emergency Kit
- Roadside Kit
- Trunk Organizers
- Pet Supplies Kit
- Center Console Organizers
- Glove Box Organizers

This foldable organizer is amazing for your trunk. There are a number of different compartments, handles, and the fact that it folds down is amazing. This would be great for roadside items, cleaning supplies, umbrellas, etc.
These hooks are amazing for purses, lunch boxes, coats or backpacks. There is nothing worse than trying to reach behind your driver seat for you purse. This keeps it off of the floor and in a space that makes it easy to grab.
We’ve all been there where our phone, wallet, pen, etc. goes right in between our seat and center console. It’s the worst. These gap fillers allow you to store items while also making sure nothing falls in between the seats!
