Are you looking to upgrade your hallway linen closet organization on a budget? Here are some very simple hallway linen closet ideas to help you stay organized.
If I'm being honest, it took me a year and a half to tackle this linen closet and get it organized in a way that made sense. When we first moved in, I had so many unmatched bins, no labels and random towels everywhere.
Finally, I went on Pinterest and got inspired. I found affordable bins and labels to give every item a home. My favorite addition was the portable shelves below to increase the space we had. We went through everything we were storing and decided what to keep and what to toss or donate.
This process was honestly a lot of fun and once I decided what I wanted it didn't take long at all. If you're thinking about tackling your own closet, here's your sign!
I think it is easy for people to think that in order to have an aesthetically pleasing and organized space it has to cost a ton of money, or they need to hire someone to help them with the process. This post is going to cover my entire process so you can mimic it at home if you choose to. And trust me when I say, you can!
This post is all about hallway linen closet ideas!
Hallway Closet Ideas
Ok here is where we started.... If you can't tell, our linen closet is set up in an odd way. The shelves are deep in some spots and narrow in others. There are also only three shelves and a lot of open space at the bottom.
Your space is going to determine what products (and how many) can fit and what sizes you can utilize. I highly suggest getting dimensions of your space before you purchase anything. This way you're not having to run back and forth to the store or returning/exchanging items.
I tend to think I can eyeball it and I'm more wrong than I am right haha. Learn from my mistakes!
When it comes to getting started with closet organization, bins are your BEST friend. I know that seems simple, but so many people try to store their products loosely on the shelves and things tend to migrate a lot easier that way. Getting your items organized is one thing but maintaining them in the future is equally as important.
The Organization Process
As I've mentioned in a previous post about my favorite organization TV shows, I use the Home Edit process of organizing. If you haven't watched the show I HIGHLY recommend it.
They utilize a four step process of editing, categorizing, containing and maintaining your space. The goal is to get your items in order and keep it that way with as little effort as possible. Ultimately you want to make the space accessible and user friendly.
Edit
When it came to tackling this process, I started with the edit step. I pulled everything we owned out of the closet and laid it out. In this step you are reviewing what you have so that you can either keep, donate or toss. Obviously in this stage we want to avoid waste, but you also don't want to hang onto anything you don't need.
Categorize
Once you know what you are keeping, you can categorize your items. If you are going to utilize bins, this is an important step because how many bins you can fit will help you determine how many categories to have.
Contain
Then you can start containing your items. You can organize the products and items within the bins themselves and then place them on the shelves.
Maintain
The final step is to maintain your space over time. I think labels play a huge role in this because you know where everything goes and you aren't just tossing items in a random bin.
Organization Products
For our linen closet, I went with the white bins at the top for products and the woven baskets on the bottom shelf for towels and miscellaneous items . The plastic bins are available on Amazon and are linked here. You can get a three pack of the woven bins on Amazon here.
I love the plastic bins because they are easy to hang label holders off of and they are super lightweight. They truly hold SO much. I added a few of the extra small ones for some tinier items that I want to grab easily. The woven basket on the bottom added some dimension and are good for things like hand towels, hair towels and face cloths.
Lastly, I added the mobile shelves for our towels because they were taking up precious space on the higher shelves. It allowed me to utilize empty space below and it was a game changer. It's very easy to pull out when I'm putting towels away. This was on sale from Nordstrom Rack a while back but I will link a similar option from Amazon here.
This is our after photo! I'm truly loving how it came out. It is extremely easy to finds things and put things away. When it comes to a closet with a lot of products, I suggest the white bins over the acrylic bins because it hides some of the "mess".
The labels sit on the bins super easily and really elevate the look of the closet. If we ever had guests visiting I would be proud of them going in the closet for a towel or something from the bins. It is so satisfying every time I open it and there is no stress when it comes to grabbing something you need.
These steel label storage bin labels are very affordable and really elevate your linen closet organization. They make it easier to find things and are also very aesthetically pleasing.
You can either write the labels yourself or order stickers to use on the cardstock from Amazon or Etsy. If you have your own label maker you can use that as well! Pro tip - I don't love the marker they come with so I would a thicker paint pen if you can.
Final Thoughts
This covers our linen closet makeover and I am so glad I get to share the process with you all! It was really exciting to see my vision come to life with minimal effort and money. Even if you don't have a knack for organizing, it's not too late to learn. There are tips all over Pinterest and the organization shows in the blog post I mentioned above are super motivating and educational.
