Are you looking for motivation or tips for organization & cleaning? Or do you simply love watching shows where other people clean and organize?? Here are my favorite home organization shows I highly recommend!
I've been a huge fan of HGTV for as long as I can remember. I loved watching people shop for homes, remodel homes, decorate homes, etc. When I realized that platforms like Netflix were putting out shows about organization and cleaning I was pumped.
There is something extremely motivating about watching someone else declutter and organize their home. I always learn something new that I can implement into my own home.
Being a professional organizer was always a dream of mine so I love living vicariously through people like the women in these shows haha.
This post is all about home organization shows!
Organizing Shows on Netflix 2022
There are a number of series on Netflix that have come out in the last few years that I have been loving. I'm going to go over a few of my favorites and what I enjoy about them. I highly recommend them all if you are looking for series about organizing, decluttering and improving the functionality of your home!
Up first is Get Organized with the Home Edit
I love so much about this show I don't even know where to begin. It completely took off when it first came out and they just released the second season which is so good. The two women who started the business, Clea and Joanna are best friends who share a love for organization.
They have an array of clients from every day people like you and me to celebrity clients (which are some of my favorite episodes). You get to see them organize bedrooms, home offices, closets and even professional spaces. It is really helpful to see their process in a number of different spaces so you can get inspiration for an area you might want to tackle in your own home.
Their overall process of decluttering and organizing is below.
1. Edit - this is the term they use for pulling everything out the space you are looking to organize and determine what to keep, what to donate and what to dispose of
2. Categorize - once you know what you are keeping, you can categorize your items by type of item so you can keep like items together
3. Contain - in this step you are determining the best space and organization products to use to contain the items that you are keeping
4. Maintain - maintenance is the most important part of keeping any space organized. If you successfully complete the first three steps, maintenance shouldn't be as difficult as it may have been in the past
I enjoy so much about this show and the process of the Home Edit, but I think my favorite thing to come out of this show is that they created their own product line of organization products. The items are available at Walmart for very affordable prices. I love that they were designed by professionals who work in the space every day.
Overall this show is a 10/10 and I couldn't recommend it enough! Visit their blog for all kinds of tips, challenges, etc.
Shows About Decluttering
Up next is Tidying Up with Marie Kondo
Marie Kondo is a Japanese organization consultant who is known for her method called the KonMari method. In the show she visits American families who need help decluttering and organizing their homes.
There were a few large takeaways I had from this show. One being the concept of the items in your home sparking joy in your life. Marie encourages her clients to sit with their items for a moment to determine if something that they want to keep actually brings them joy or not. If not, it's time to donate. The show acknowledges that this practice is more psychological than practical. Although I agree, I still think there are ways to utilize the concept in a practical way.
I think about this all of the time when I am going through my closets or drawers and looking to declutter the space. If it's not a necessity or something that doesn't bring you joy, why would you keep it?
The other large takeaway is the KonMari folding method that Marie uses for folding clothes. This method creates so much more space in your drawers and really allows you to see what you have. There are so many Youtube videos on how to achieve this folding method if you're interested!
Organizing Shows on HGTV
If you are an HGTV lover, then you need to watch Hot Mess House
This show is about Cassandra Arssen who visits people's homes to help them tackle areas where clutter has completely taken over. Her overall concept is that you can control your chaos if you know how.
She works with her contractor to create custom organization solutions that are specific to the clients needs. I love these shows because you get to see the whole process and then the large reveal at the end. This show is super inspiring and gives great tips that you can apply at home.
Documentaries
There are two documentaries on Netflix that I would highly suggest about minimalism. I think the biggest issue people have when it comes to having a cluttered home is that we hang onto too many things that we actually don't need. By addressing the overall concept of what it means to be a minimalist or to live with less, we work towards a decluttered and organized home.
In 2016, Netlfix came out with the documentary Minimalism. This focuses on interviews of people who are unwilling to accept the idea that things are what bring people happiness. They really focus on the concept that less is always more.
In 2021, the documentary, The Minimalists, Less is Now was released. This documentary follows the same two friends from Minimalism who continue to discuss the increasing issue we have with over consumption and how it contributes to our discontent.
I think it is always important to take an inventory of what you have, what you're purchasing and why. If we are more thoughtful about what we purchase and whether or not it truly brings us joy, we may find ourselves with less. With less clutter and less items, we can focus on what truly brings us happiness.
Summary
Overall, there are a ton of shows out there that focus on organizing and improving your space. There are so many ways to go about this process and it is always helpful to get tips from professionals and to truly see their process from start to finish.
It is also important to remember that with less things, the easier it is to organize and maintain your space. Try to focus on what items are actually essential and what items truly bring you happiness.
Living in a cluttered or disorganized space truly does impact our overall mental health and these shows are packed full with tips and tricks to tackle these areas one step at a time!
