Is your mattress in need of a deep clean but you don't know where to start? Here are some tips for how to deep clean a mattress!
Cleaning your mattress.... the chore that everyone knows they need to do but probably don't do enough. When you actually think about it, not cleaning your mattress is beyond gross.
But where do you start? How many steps are there? Is it a long and hard process? In this post I'll be covering a few different methods for deep cleaning your mattress. Ultimately, it is not a very hard process and it is so worth it.
Having a dirty mattress can actually affect the air quality in your home. There are contaminants in a dirty mattress that can lead to odor and affect your sleep. Additionally, if you are a hot sleeper, your mattress may have sweat stains or water stains.
It's important to clean your mattress because it can harbor dust mites, dead skin, dirt and other debris. This is especially important if you have allergies, trouble sleeping or pets.
We will go over how to address staining and how to deep clean the inside of your mattress. A mattress deep clean isn't something that needs to be done all of the time, but you'll be glad when it's done!
This post is all about how to deep clean a mattress!
How to Deep Clean a Stained Mattress
If you remove all of your bedding (including a mattress topper if you use one) and expose your mattress, you may see sweat stains, water stains, etc. Before tackling these stains, you will want to break out your vacuum. Vacuum the top and sides of your mattress to remove as many dead skin cells and debris as possible. Ideally you'll use an upholstery attachment if you have one!
Once the mattress is completely vacuumed, you can start working on the stains. Feel free to use a stain remover of your choice, but I learned on YouTube that you can use two parts hydrogen peroxide to one part dawn dish soap for a homemade stain remover. I would use a clear dish soap because something green or blue could actually stain it.
You can take an old tooth brush or a cleaning brush and with circle motions start attacking the stains. Use as little cleaner as possible because you don't want it to settle into your mattress. Once the stain has come up, use a damp towel to wipe it clean.
You will be amazed at how easily the stains come up. If they are super old and stubborn, you may not be able to get the mattress back to brand new, but you should at least see some improvement. Just because you still have a stubborn stain at the end doesn't mean it's not clean.
Once you have spot treated the top of the mattress, you can move onto deodorizing and deep cleaning the rest!
How to Deep Clean a Mattress with Vinegar and Baking Soda
Above we talked about using hydrogen peroxide and dish soap as an at-home stain remover to spot treat stains. However, you can also use a combo of vinegar and baking soda to accomplish the same thing (my favorite duo). For this method, you would put a layer of baking soda over the stain, and then spray vinegar mixed with water on top to create a paste. Let it sit for a bit and then use a brush to break up the paste and work it into the mattress. Once the stain is removed you can vacuum up the residue.
Onto deodorizing! Baking soda is an amazing product for fighting odors that have built up in your mattress. It also helps to remove any moisture that may be caught in the mattress. Depending on the size of your bed, you may need a few boxes of baking soda for this step.
Sprinkle baking soda over the entire top of your mattress. Use a brush to make sure it is evenly coated. You're going to want to let this sit for several hours. For best results, let it sit for 24 hours. However, most of us aren't going to have that time. I would say a minimum of four hours will work wonders. After the time is up, you can give the mattress one last vacuum.
At this stage, I like to take my pillow/linen spray with lavender essential oils and I essentially douse the mattress. Although the odors will be removed with the baking soda, this is just a nice added touch for an extra clean and relaxing scent.

If your mattress is prone to stains from pets, eating in bed, sweating while you sleep, etc. it might be worth it to get a spill-proof mattress cover. This will help you go longer in between your deep cleans.
Other things that will help keep your mattress clean are regularly cleaning your sheets and pillows. You could also do a quick vacuum when you are changing your bedding even if you aren't treating stains or using baking soda every time.
